For the position of defensive coordinator, the 49ers of San Francisco have interviewed Robert Saleh, a former head coach of the New York Jets. From 2017 through 2020, Saleh was in this role with the 49ers. He then left to become head coach in New York.
It was a no-brainer for the 49ers to interview Saleh for the open post of defensive coordinator. Following his dismissal as head coach by the Jets, he has become a curious figure. It became more noticeable after the 49ers benched Nick Sorensen.
On top of that, the 49ers appear intent on making minor adjustments to the framework of their defensive strategy. Considering Saleh’s stellar performance in his last two seasons with the 49ers, re-signing him would be the ideal move in this regard.
While leaving his position as head coach, Kyle Shanahan expressed his admiration for the team’s strategy during his Wednesday leaving press conference. With the proper people in the appropriate places, it’s one of the most difficult things to go to. However, I believe that individuals adapt to plans, and that you, too, will need to adapt based on your staff.
The 49ers can continue to interview potential defensive coordinators. I have no doubt that they will desire to hold additional interviews prior to reaching a definitive conclusion.
The Jacksonville Jaguars and the Las Vegas Raiders are the two teams who have yet to interview Saleh for the position of head coach. Since those positions are complete busts, though, I question whether he is serious about wanting them. In a year or two, when things improve, Saleh can go back to the 49ers and get himself together.
That is the crux of the matter with getting Saleh back. It is highly probable that the 49ers’ defence will regain its elite status under his guidance, as he is a fantastic coordinator. Unfortunately, his ambition to become a head coach will force him to leave again. Bringing him back into the fold is a gamble.
