Spain’s football governing bodies have denied Barcelona’s request to register midfielder Dani Olmo and forward Pau Victor for the latter part of the season.
The summer signings were initially registered only until the end of December due to the competition’s salary ceiling limitations.
Both individuals may now be sidelined till summer, with their careers suspended, amidst recent speculation around the potential departure of the much sought-after Olmo from the club.
Olmo, 26, has been a consistent member of Hansi Flick’s squad since his transfer from RB Leipzig for approximately £51 million, following his contribution to Spain’s victory in last summer’s European Championship.
Former Girona player Victor, 23, has predominantly appeared as a substitute in Spain’s premier division this season.
A collaborative announcement from the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and La Liga affirmed their rejection of Barcelona’s petition to register both players.
The statement indicated: “The monitoring committee has resolved to withhold prior approval and the definitive license requested by FC Barcelona for players Daniel Olmo Carvajal and Pau Victor Delgado.”
RFEF and LaLiga expressed satisfaction with the club’s enhanced financial status following recent initiatives to generate revenue.
According to league regulations, a club is prohibited from re-registering a player during the same season following the cancellation of their registration, as stated in the joint announcement.
Barcelona’s requests to register the couple had previously been denied by two courts.
Spanish media said that Barcelona intends to submit a protest to the Spanish government to seek an extension of the players’ registrations, although the club has not yet commented on the recent developments.
Barcelona occupies the third position in La Liga, trailing leaders Real Madrid by five points.
