Teddy Bridgewater has returned.
The Detriot Lions announced that the veteran quarterback had come out of retirement to join their active roster on Thursday.
The news was initially reported by NFL Network Insiders Mike Garafolo, Tom Pelissero, and Ian Rapoport.
In February, Bridgewater announced his plans to retire from the NFL, which he had first announced late in the 2023 regular season. He immediately led his alma mater, Miami Northwestern High School, to a Division 3A Florida High School Athletic Association championship in mid-December, marking the beginning of his second chapter as a coach.
Bridgewater felt it was time to rejoin the NFL if a team would take him back when the 2024 contract was completed. He found a suitor in Lions head coach Dan Campbell, whom he knew well from his stints in Detroit and New Orleans.
Teddy and I have been communicating for some time. Confirming the news, Campbell told reporters Thursday that it was something that was always possible. “Everyone is aware of Teddy’s contributions to his community down there. His coaching debut went quite well because they won a title down there. However, having someone with experience back here who is staying in shape, throwing, and just getting him worked in here a little bit adds a level of professionalism and veteran presence. He is a fantastic addition to our squad and a perfect fit for the role.”
